All about hair extensions you should know

May 13, 2024 SEE WIG

Switching one's hairstyle does not solely mean dyeing your hair or getting a new haircut. Today, you can use hair extensions to sport a new look. Furthermore, you can volumize your thin hair or lengthen the short ones. Discussion about hair extensions varies as hair accessory types come in different types. Besides the cost involving them, you also must know how to properly wear and care for these accessories so they'll last.

Types of hair extensions

What are hair extensions?

Remember your friend or favorite celebrity who was short-haired today but suddenly had long and volumized hair the following day? This could be because of hair extensions. Others call them hair weaves. It's a form of synthetic or natural hair closely attached to the scalp. As a result, the extensions add length, volume, or color to your natural hair. Some hair extensions are long-lasting, meaning they are attached to the hair for a year before removal. They effortlessly mix with your hair, making it hard to see you're wearing them.

How do hair extensions work?

Hair extensions can naturally blend with your existing hair to add length, color, and thickness. Regardless of your hair length, excellently installed hair extensions let you achieve the style and look you've been dreaming of. Of course, hair extensions will only work if you choose the appropriate type, color, and length for your hair.

Common types of hair extensions

Extensions can be glued in, braided, woven, or clipped in. This is why you can also expect different hair extensions, which you can maximize for several events and occasions.

  • Clip-in. Clip in hair extensions comes in strands of contoured pieces and is attached at the base using silicone or fabric. You only need to clip the pieces to the natural hair or ask someone to attach the extension. Every clip snaps close and opens effortlessly.
  • Tape-in. Tape in hair extensions is pre-taped and then glued/taped together on each side of your hair. In most cases, hairdressers and hair stylists can attach tape-ins for you since you will need help aligning the extensions with roots. They're also applied using a heated tool that heats the tape or glue. Attaching tape-in extensions usually takes about forty minutes to one hour. You can even reuse them if the quality is good.
  • Sew-in. Attaching sew in hair extensions means you must braid your existing hair into cornrows and use threads and needles to sew the weave into the cornrow or braid. Individuals with thicker hair generally use sew-in hair extensions. Unlike the previous two hair extensions, the sew-in application takes several hours. The tight attachment process can strain the scalp and could create discomfort.
  • Microlink. This type of hair extension is sometimes referred to as micro loop or micro bead extensions. The process entails attaching small sections of hair to your natural hair with a silicone-lined bead. A specialized tool is used to secure the bead to keep the extension in place. Although this method does not require glue or heat, it can cause damage if not installed properly by a professional.
  • Fusion. As the name suggests, fusion hair extension is fused to your natural hair with various adhesives like glue. The application process takes about three to four hours and is generally performed by a hairdresser. This extension is relatively more damaging to natural hair, which means it's not suitable for everyone.

Factors that affect hair extensions' price

Like any other hair accessories, the cost of these extensions varies depending on several factors, including the following.

  • Hair extension type. The most affordable option is clip-ins, while fusion hair extensions are the most expensive. You can attach the clip-in yourself, but it takes a professional to apply the fusion hair extension; hence, it's more costly.
  • Purpose of getting hair extensions. Whether it's volume enhancement or lengthening, it will affect the overall cost of your hair extensions.
  • Hair quality. Like wigs, hair extensions also are made from different materials. Of course, synthetic hair extensions are relatively cheaper. Meanwhile, human hair and virgin human hair extensions are more expensive.
  • Installation method. As mentioned, some hair extensions let you attach them yourself to your natural hair, like clip-ins, while other types might require a hairdresser to ensure the proper attachment and placement of the extension. If you choose the latter, it may cost you more.
  • Maintenance requirements. You may need regular appointments to reapply or readjust the extensions, which can add to the overall cost. Besides that, you also need to purchase hair care products to keep the extensions in their best health and quality.
  • Brand. There are several hair extension brands in the market. Some are cheap and low-quality, while premium ones surely cost more. However, look closely at each brand; not all expensive ones guarantee the best quality.

Guide to buy the best hair extensions

Buying hair extensions can be hassle-free if you have previously purchased a good-quality product. However, it can be daunting if it's your first time. Consider some of the pointers below.

  • Decide on the type of hair you wish to use. As you know, hair extensions usually are made from synthetic fibers or human hair. The latter provides a more natural appearance.
  • Select a color or shade. Choosing the wrong shade will create an uneven, fake, and inconsistent look. You can make a color match online and select a shade similar to your natural hair color, especially the middle and the end parts of the hair.
  • Decide on the application method. As previously mentioned, you can have a do-it-yourself hair extension attachment. However, if you choose the more advanced extensions, you must seek help from hairdressers and professionals.
  • Assess how long you need the extension. Clip-ins can be used for several months or a year, while other hair extension variants can only be used once.
  • Read product reviews. Whether those are affordable or expensive extensions, you must ensure they are beneficial. Feedback from previous hair extension users allows you to weigh your options and make an informed decision.
